Awarded for his successes achieved over the course of 165 sorties as a bomber pilot. In this time he particularly distinguished himself during the combat over Sevastopol as well as for his improvised night-fighter sorties. In this capacity he achieved 11 night victories in the east… as a bomber pilot! It can be presumed that most if not all of these were prior to his award of the Knight’s Cross.
